Corn FAIL

As I predicted, but did not say, the corn we planted in the ground was eaten, by rabbits and squirrels I am guessing, despite our best efforts. I don't think my roommate (and owner of the house) believed that corn could be grown in a container. I knew better but figured, what the hey. Let's give it a try.

Today I did what I should have done a month ago and planted the corn safely in a container in the paddock. I did not have enough Mel's Mix (necessary for intensive container planting - see link to Square Foot Garden) so I put some semi-finished compost in the bottom and MM on top and planted. We shall see.

It is interesting getting used to a new planting cycle. It is closer to New England than Temecula for timing. I am hoping to extend the season with some mini-greenhouses. Won't know until I try.

Didn't really think ahead about how I was getting it back in the container.

I was going to build a stand for it and then saw how many empty plant containers we had so used those. I am sincerely hoping they can take the weight as the corn grows.

Definitely not quite done. But close enough.

 Tada

I planted a lot. I hope I did not overdo it. -22 plants. Too much?

I covered it with tulle so the ravens, finches, chickens, etc, etc, do not eat the seeds.

In spite if having over an acre to run around in, they seem to love the tack room (re-purposed as garden shed)

Outside of the master bedroom is a fake tree where some house finches (or orioles - unsure) made a nest. I have a picture of the eggs and some of the newborns - I think within 24 hours old. It looks like one egg has not even hatched yet.

Very cool. Does enough sun get through the tulle?
