Salmon Season

Just down the road from Tommy's is the Nimbus Hatchery. This is where salmon come to spawn in this fork of the river. It was very interesting and worth a peek if you are in Sacramento between October and February. Unfortunately for us, most of the salmon were waiting at a gate by the entry from the river - they open it tomorrow to great media and local fanfare. In the meantime there are steelhead trout in tanks and the odd salmon who were small enough to get through the gate.

Feeding the trout - they were pretty good jumpers.

Behind is the weir and gate for the salmon to make their way into the hatcheries.
There is a dam further up the river so the hatchery saves salmon.

The American River. Looking from the salmon ladders in the hatchery. They get about 25% of the salmon who come the river, the rest have laid their eggs in the area we are looking at.

Natural light is not a good light source for the top of my head. I don't like the fact that I am balding :(
