So, for the first time since I was probably three or so, I have been without a TV for eight months. I did not really feel the lack until the Olympics and then I really missed it. It is not like I was reading or anything (actually - three books every two weeks from the library, but nothing pithy); I have been catching a few shows on Hulu.com and I even caught quite a few speeches from the conventions via nbcnews.com.
Today, however, my landlady said she had her ex-father-in-law's TV (he died a few days ago) and did I want it? Cable is provided in the casita so what the heck. So I am back. The background noise of my life. Now granted I cannot record and the TV is one of the old fat back kind, but those are small things. It has taken my last inch of surface but I am plugged in again and no longer have to wait for the hated BUFFERING. Very exciting stuff, in a very small way. :)
I am not a TV apologist. I embrace it for its babysitting (give mom a minute to do something without interruption), it background noise, its bizarrely beautiful women and handsome men, its camaraderie and even for the news and entertainment. I am a fan and like friends long gone, I didn't realize how much I missed it until I had it again.

Ahhh..but it is a distraction from real life. Beware!
From your non TV watching cousin!

As far as I am concerned, that is its strength. But even at that, it is reserved for late night times when things are a little too quiet and lonely and I am out of projects and reading material. Or need noise and I do not want music.
Besides, at this moment in time I have $0.24 in the bank, less than a 1/4 tank of gas and am still struggling to find work, both odd jobs and regular work so escape from reality is fine with me. And remember, I don't drink. LOL. But I am not worried, something will come through. In the meantime, I will take my cheap thrills.
Actually I think I am sick of it already! LOL!
Meg, I am a TV person. Couldn't live without it. :)

Beth,
I don't abstain entirely: give me an episode of Downton Abbey or Boardwalk Empire and I am down for the count!
And, Clare, I know it is a great help at night when it is lonely.
I am glad you have it!
What is your snail mail address?
Hugs
