Garden Painting Redo

Thanks to my new roomie, I attended the Fallbrook Art Association meeting last week. It is a really talented group of artists and it was a joy to be there.

At the beginning of the meeting their guest speaker did critiques on paintings that members brought with them. It was soooo good to hear. And it lit a candle for me regarding my painting of my garden. I happen to love that painting but more for the reminder of the garden than for stellar technique. However, there was something really bothering me about it and I could not put my finger on it until the critique.

Of course, it was the stupid overdone hill which should be fading into the background. I think the focal point is ok and the sky could use improvement but I am not sure how. So I redid the hill. It may still be too green, maybe too dark or still too detailed but it sure helps the cypress pop a little and ceases taking all of the attention from the roses and the salvia. Agree or disagree. I am OK with critiquing. It is the only way one move forward.

Oh yeah. And the roses look like polka dots. Thinking about that one...

Interesting- I had always liked it before, quite a lot actually- but perhaps I like it with the hill muted better now? I need to look at it again and again, before I am sure!
