There is a movement of gardeners that go to public places and plant without asking for permission. They call themselves guerrilla gardeners. I have now joined their ranks. Sort of...
I have a friend who has been wanting a garden since December and she is very health conscious. I told her all about my method and ingredients and she wanted to check with her organic friends because she wanted to be sure everything was perfect. She did not like the idea of vermiculite because she was told it contains asbestos. Not true - it was a particular mine and it no longer applies - and hasn't for years. And on and on. What I do is a planting method. It starts out organic and it is up to the gardener to choose if it stays that way. She is also extremely busy.
So, I just went over and planted. Brought a bag of my Mel's Mix; peat, compost and vermiculite, and a 4 pack of tomatoes and I started planting. By the end of the day we had run over to the nursery and gotten more plants - gherkins, watermelon, and spaghetti squash - and planted them too. We ended up using straight compost for the last few, but it should work out fine.
I had only round containers to work with, so I eyeballed what might constitute about a square foot and planted accordingly.
These are large (24" across or so) pots. Closest are the gherkins, then 3 tomatoes, then one tomato - took me awhile to get the square peg thinking into the round pot.
Tomatoes - one white, one orange, one black
Not really sure how I am going to trellis everything in the long run. Still thinking on that.
The watermelon - also a sprawler
