I was comped some gas to LA so what could I do? I had to go. It has been a long time. As usual, I went to visit my two (three actually) friends. Sha, my trader friend, and Murph and Rose. Sha was available during the day and the Murph's after six so it worked out perfectly. I said no one had to feed me, but as it turned out it was lunch with Sha and dinner with the Murph's.
Although both of them, and the restaurants we went to, are 5 miles apart, it is two different worlds.
Btw, although this is the best way to get from one to the other (and I did not go right from restaurant to restaurant) I managed to end up all the way up on Sunset and had to backtrack a bit. I know LA WAY better than I did three years ago, but there are still gaps. Plus it took me an hour to go those 5 (plus sidetracking) miles because it was rush hour. And also - making a left turn in this town is not to be believed, but that is for another day...
When I go to visit Sha in Beverly Hills, I dress. Which means I barely pass for not homeless by BH standards, but I try. Sha, being young and gorgeous, dresses in a manner I could not have gotten away with in my best years. And to add to it, she always has a great car. This time, it was a beemer. She claims it is too big for her, but it is just the beemer I would choose were it mine.
Now understand that she is struggling just like me right now. She blew all of her money on an ill fated romance in Uruguay and is currently rebuilding. So, if you are poor, it matters who your friends are and if they are loaded and they help you out (the beemer) you really score. Down and out in Beverly Hills is different from down and out anywhere else.
The BMW 750 Li sedan we tooled around the Hills in.
See? Gorgeous.
See? Gorgeous.
Natalee Thai in BH at Olympic and Robertson is all designer interior and gorgeous presentation. I love Thai so the food portion of the day was not a problem for me. Coconut milk, curry, cilantro, lime. What's not to love?
Both restaurants are in what are essentially strip malls, but Natalee has valet parking. Of course the valet took the moment before we arrived to go to the head so we ended up parking ourselves and he ran into the garage to get the key.
Thai BBQ on 3rd and Ardmore had aquariums that masked the entrances to the rest rooms. You park yourself if you can find space. My half crushed Buick did not score any derisive or pitying looks in this area of Koreatown. I fit right in. And the real plus was the food here was also fantastic. Had a great time with Rose and Murph as usual and left the city with loads of leftover Thai food to get me through the next few days. What more could I ask?
Another 'Only in LA' moment
