Building Challenged

It is all I can do to build square boxes with no bottoms. It uses all of my efforts to get it done. And for one box I even walked away from it for 5 days because I could not manage it. Building things does not come naturally to me.

One of the tenets of square foot gardening is that anything that is a vine gets trellised to save space. One could also let it spill out of the box, but in this yard it would be trampled by the dogs. Since March, I have been trying to wrap my head around how to build the trellis cheaply and so I could do it alone because even worse than me trying to build, is me trying to explain what I want. My vision is clear, my verbal skills are limited.

None of this stopped me from planting a watermelon, cantaloupe and a pumpkin. The pumpkin finally forced me to act and below are the results. I did actually find some 10' by 1" PVC pipe behind the storage shed. I hacked 4' off for the crossbar and built myself a trellis. Woohoo. Now, just need to figure out how I am going to make a sling for the watermelons and pumpkins so they don't break off of the vine...

The completed trellis - 4 months in the planning

You can just about make out the pumpkin which is already up to my chin.

Extra bonus pic: corn, zuc and beans coming along

There are three tomato plants side by side. The one on the right is the
Early Girl and is has lots of tomatoes, but is maybe a foot high. Odd.

Growing things is good for the soul, as well as the palate!
