Worm Tower

In case you don't know this, worms are a gardener's friend. And everyone has been telling me I need more friends. Red wigglers in particular are quite useful in creating a rich compost. So, to create a little fun for the kids and add compost directly to the garden I put together a worm tower. It is very simple (as am I these days!)

I started with an old flower pot and glued a coffee filter over the hole to keep out flies and let in air. The one I saw used a piece of screen, but I didn't have any handy and didn't see buying any for the small amount I needed.

Then I bought a right angle, 3" thing. Something to do with plumbing. Cheap.

We buried the tube and added compost.

Then the worms

And some vegetation - this needs to be added on a regular basis - any scraps, coffee grounds, etc. The idea is that the worms will go back and forth between the tower and the garden. Or not. Time will tell.

The boys examine their handiwork.

The final product
