I remember the Bicentennial. The Fourth of July is definitely a top holiday for me. I lived San Marcos, CA at the time and went to Mission Bay for the day. It was San Diego Central for parties and I was sure we would see numerous personal and public fireworks displays. I am a sucker for it all and love the flag waving and all of it. I know my Revolutionary War and have stood in Valley Forge and touched (or at least got near) the Liberty Bell.
As it turned out, we saw not one fireworks display. Mostly we just saw drunken partyers and lost track of the friends we came with. LOL. But I enjoyed it anyway and it does not diminish my love for the holiday. It is America and it is summer.
I have been out of the country twice on the Fourth and it just seemed like I had missed something both times. I hope everyone has a ball!
Interesting Note: My friend, Bonnie, who is also my son's mother-in-law, had her oldest child on the Bicentennial. Which is fascinating enough, but come to find out that all four children were born on holidays! July 4, Labor Day, Memorial Day and New Year's Eve.

hi clare, this is my first 4th to do nothing and for the first time i couldn't care less. i'm usually the bbq/homemadeicecream, decorating queen of the 4th, but am alone this year and enjoying the lack of stress over it all.
i love your blog!! i love your vegetables! i love your recipes! i was at the fair and saw a raised bed with a Hinge, to fold down the top ( for harvesting i guess) and thought of you immediately! probably shouldn't give you any more ideas.......bonnie
p.s. i also specifically remember the bicentennial, because i had my first baby that day!! someone made her a little t-shirt that said "bicentennial baby".......bonnie
Corie was a Bicentennial year baby, not the fourth of July though. I remember we sat in lawn chairs at the bottom of my parents old neighborhood street & Rte 252, and watched the wagon trains roll by that had travelled from CA and other parts, across the country, to arrive in Valley Forge...was quite impressive.

I think maybe that is why I always loved the Fourth. It seemed do local what with the Liberty Bell and Valley Forge. I would love to have seen the wagons - but they were going the wrong way! LOL
