Final Potato Harvest

I had three squares of potatoes and I harvested the last one today. I planted at the end of March so I did not give it much of a season, but I am happy with the results.

The soil combo I use, paired with the fact that it is a raised bed allows me to be able to sink my hand all the way to the bottom, so I did occasionally and harvested a few potatoes without pulling the vines. So, this is not even all it produced.

Interesting note, the potato is not a tuber, it grows off of the stem of the vine, which is why you have to constantly keep covering the vine with dirt and why I added a high rise to the bed.

I will be dedicating a bed just to 'taters come December when the next recommended planting time is. Oh God! This is sounding more and more like a boring gardening blog. Ok, it *is* a boring gardening blog. Someone invite me somewhere so I have something else to talk about!

Anyway, I am having fun - now you can have vicarious gardening fun through me:

This is the high rise. It is 16" total.

You can see the potatoes growing right from the vine.

The harvest. Not huge, but pretty darn good.

It is now ready for the next crop: carrots.

Watch this space....

Post Script: Grecia came to my room to ask me something with "the girls" (Layla and Laska - the dogs). The girls went out to my balcony but I didn't think anything of it. Then they left. I had forgotten that I had put the potatoes out there to dry. What made me remember this was the trail of potatoes that went from the balcony to the first floor. There were four of them and between the two dogs I am not sure how they transported them. I may search them for pockets and thumbs.

Luckily, they did not seem to like them and they were mostly whole.

Layla, for her part, denies the whole thing.
